Sam van Iersel 1999
Working primarily in ceramics, Sam is visually inspired by Brutalist architecture, modular systems, and construction toys. These influences are not just aesthetic, but practical tools of experimentation that drive both form and process. His work often begins with building modular molds, leading to sculptural ceramic objects that are structured yet unpredictable. Two pieces are never the same.
Most of Sam’s objects deliberately challenge ease of use. They encourage a slower interaction, asking users to reconsider how they relate to everyday items and habits. For example, his mugs don’t just hold coffee, but rather contain questions about comfort, intention, and the role of play in making and using.
Through his experimental approach, Sam creates ceramics that are somewhat functional in form and always conceptual by nature. Straddling the line between design and sculptural object.
